As a hormone skin clinician, one of the things I hear most often is, “I’ve always looked after my skin, but suddenly nothing seems to be working anymore.”
For many women, that change begins during perimenopause. Skin that has always behaved itself can suddenly become dry, sensitive, unpredictable or prone to breakouts. Fine lines seem more noticeable, complexion loses its glow, and the products you’ve relied on for years no longer deliver the same results.
If this sounds familiar, it’s a very common experience for women during perimenopause and menopause.
At the same time, we are surrounded by skincare advice. Social media is full of influencers recommending the latest miracle ingredient, while beauty shelves are packed with products promising firmer, brighter and younger-looking skin.
Retinol. Niacinamide. Ceramides. Peptides. Acids. Barrier repair. Cell turnover.
It’s no wonder so many women tell me they don’t know where to start.
Your Skin Changes – So Your Skincare Should Too
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that if a skincare routine has worked for years, it should continue to work forever.
The reality is that our skin changes throughout our lives, particularly during perimenopause and menopause.
As oestrogen levels begin to decline, our skin naturally produces less collagen, loses moisture more easily and becomes more delicate. You may notice:
- Increased dryness and dehydration
- Loss of firmness and elasticity
- Fine lines becoming more noticeable
- Breakouts, particularly around the chin and jawline
- Redness or increased sensitivity
- Skin that simply doesn’t look as healthy or radiant as it once did
These changes are completely normal – but they do mean your skin has different needs than it did ten or even five years ago.
More Products Don’t Always Mean Better Results
One of the biggest mistakes I see is women adding more and more products to their routine, hoping something will work.
Often they’re using excellent ingredients – but too many of them, in the wrong combination, or in a way that’s simply not right for their skin.
When your skin is already changing because of hormones, overloading it with active ingredients can leave it feeling irritated, inflamed or even more sensitive.
Sometimes, simplifying a routine can have a far greater impact than adding another expensive serum.
Understanding the Ingredients That Matter
You don’t need to become a skincare expert, but understanding a few key ingredients can help you make much better choices.
Retinol (Vitamin A)
One of the best-researched ingredients for encouraging collagen production and improving fine lines and uneven skin tone. It’s incredibly effective when introduced correctly.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
A brilliant all-rounder that helps calm inflammation, reduce redness, regulate oil production and strengthen the skin barrier.
Ceramides
These help restore and protect your skin barrier, keeping moisture locked in. As hormonal skin often becomes drier, they’re an ingredient I frequently recommend.
Glycolic Acid
A gentle exfoliating acid that helps improve skin texture and brightness by removing dead skin cells. Used appropriately, it can make skin look fresher and more radiant.
When Good Skincare Goes Wrong
If you’ve ever bought a product because everyone was talking about it, only to end up with redness, peeling or breakouts, it doesn’t necessarily mean the product was wrong.
It may simply have been wrong for your skin.
It could also be that:
- You’re using too many active ingredients together.
- Your products are being applied in the wrong order.
- You’re using them too often.
- Your skin barrier needs repairing before introducing stronger ingredients.
- Your skin’s needs have changed because of hormonal fluctuations.
This is something I see regularly in clinic, and often the solution is much simpler than people expect.
Morning and Evening Routines Both Have a Purpose
Your morning skincare should focus on protecting your skin through hydration, antioxidants and daily SPF.
Your evening routine is when your skin naturally repairs itself, making it the ideal time for ingredients such as retinol or gentle exfoliating acids—provided they’re right for your skin.
Using the right ingredients at the right time can make a noticeable difference.
Don’t Follow Trends – Follow Your Skin
One of the most important things I’d like every woman to know is this:
Your skin doesn’t care what’s trending.
It responds to consistency, balance and products that are suited to its individual needs.
The routine that’s right for your friend, your daughter or your favourite influencer may be completely wrong for you – and that’s perfectly okay.
If You’re Feeling Confused, You’re Not Alone
One of the reasons we introduced our specialist Hormone Skin Clinic is because we recognised just how many women were struggling with skin changes during perimenopause and menopause, often without understanding why.
You don’t have to keep guessing which products to buy or wondering whether your routine is helping or making things worse.
Myself and Arabella are specially trained to understand the unique relationship between hormones and skin health. We’ll take the time to assess your skin, listen to your concerns and create a personalised plan that works for you, whether you’re dealing with dryness, sensitivity, pigmentation, acne or changes in skin texture.
For many women, understanding why their skin has changed is the biggest turning point. Once you know what’s happening, it becomes much easier to choose the right treatments and skincare with confidence.
If you’ve been feeling frustrated by your skin recently, we’d love to help. Sometimes a few small changes can make a remarkable difference, and having expert guidance means you don’t have to navigate it alone.
