In this Blog, I will be sharing my professional advice on how to care for your skin before, during and after a sunny holiday. From essential product swaps and sun protection to pre-travel treatments like PureHydro (Hydrofacial) and Dermaplane, I will guide you through everything you need to know for summer-proofing your skin. Whether you are heading abroad or enjoying the sunshine at home, these tips will help keep your skin glowing and protected all season long.

Here comes summer!
Summer is a time of sun-soaked holidays, glowing skin and beachside relaxation. While many of us love basking in the warmth, our skin doesn’t always feel the same way.
The increased UV exposure, higher temperatures, humidity and change in routine can take a toll on skin health. That’s why having a dedicated summer skincare routine is an essential and something we should all consider.
Why summer skincare is essential
Your skin is your body’s first line of defence, and in summer, it faces multiple stressors:
UV Radiation
Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature ageing, pigmentation, and increased skin cancer risk.
Dehydration
Hot weather and more time outdoors lead to water loss through the skin.
Oil & Sweat
Humidity and higher temperatures can make skin oilier, clogging pores and exacerbating acne.
Environmental Damage
Pollution and free radicals are more aggressive in summer, breaking down collagen and weakening skin’s barrier.
So, caring for your skin during summer is really about protection, and keeping skin healthy.
Your basic summer skincare toolkit – Obagi & Heliocare
Two standout ranges I rely on during the summer are Obagi and Heliocare, both offering clinically backed products that protect and nourish the skin.
Heliocare for sun protection
Heliocare is renowned for its broad-spectrum sunscreens with Fernblock® technology, offering strong antioxidant protection alongside UV filters. They have a vast range that includes:
Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-Free SPF 50 – this is a favourite of mine and ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, offering high UVA/UVB/HEV/infrared protection without clogging pores.
Heliocare Capsules – not many people consider these but oral supplements can boost your skin’s resistance to sun damage from the inside out and are worth considering if you are prone to pigmentation issues or burning.
Obagi medical grade skincare
Obagi’s skincare systems are formulated to address hyperpigmentation, and overall skin tone and texture which I often hear are key concerns during and after summer. Two ‘must-haves’ for your skincare are the Obagi Professional-C Serum which is packed with Vitamin C to neutralise free radicals and brighten the skin, plus Obagi Hydrate, a fabulous long-lasting, slow realease moisturiser which I find ideal for combating post-sun dehydration.

What to reduce or avoid in summer
Just as some products are perfect for summer, others are best scaled back during sunnier months.
Strong retinoids – while retinol is a powerhouse for cell turnover, it can make skin more sensitive to UV rays. If you are spending time in the sun, either reduce usage or ensure you are super diligent with sunscreen.
Aggressive exfoliants – AHA/BHA products can make the skin more photosensitive so use sparingly and never without SPF (I would suggest a minimum of 30 preferably SPF50).
Hydroquinone (skin-lightening agents) – It is now generally accepted that continuing hydroquinone use during the summer months is safe and effective for suppressing melanocyte activity. Melanocytes are skin cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour.
Pre-holiday skin prep – the treatments that make a difference
Preparing your skin before heading into full sun exposure helps to ensure it is in its healthiest state and better equipped to handle stress and here are a couple of my favourite pre-holiday treatments:
PureHydro Facial (Hydrofacial)
PureHydro Hydrofacial is a multi-step hydrating treatment that deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses the skin with antioxidants. It leaves the skin plump, refreshed, and ready for SPF absorption. It’s great for all skin types, and it also helps manage pre-existing dryness or congestion.
Dermaplane
Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and fine hairs, allowing for better penetration of skincare products. By exfoliating the top layer, your skin appears smoother and more radiant – think perfect for holiday photos and an even tan (safely with SPF, of course!).
My tip: Schedule these treatments a few days before you travel to allow the skin to settle and fully benefit.
Skincare tips whilst on holiday
Sun, saltwater, sweat, late nights, good food, and alcohol can all affect your skin so here are a few tips on how to protect it:
Wear SPF daily!
This one you should be doing already! Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning at least 30 minutes before going into the sun, and reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or if you are sweating.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration helps maintain skin elasticity and glow. Drink plenty of water, and consider hydrating mists or serums like Obagi Hydrate Luxe for extra support.
Wear a sun hat & sunglasses
Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and shade your face with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. It’s not just about avoiding sunburn as they also help reduce the chance of pigmentation and premature wrinkles.
Stick to a gentle routine
Avoid heavy actives, especially exfoliants and strong retinoids. Use a gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, antioxidant serum (like vitamin C), and SPF. At night, focus on hydration and repair. Oh, and don’t try new products – stick to products you know and trust as you don’t want to risk a reaction whilst away.
Post-holiday skin – the time to repair and restore
After time in the sun, even with the best precautions, your skin might need a little extra love and care. Some common signs of sun damage to look out for include:
- Uneven skin tone or new pigmentation
- Fine lines or increased wrinkle depth
- Dry or leathery texture
- Breakouts or inflammation
Post-holiday treatments to consider:
LED Light Therapy will calm inflammation and support collagen production.
Light chemical peels for once your tan has faded. Peels can help remove surface pigmentation and refresh skin tone.
Obagi Nu-Derm System is an amazing professional-grade solution for reversing early signs of sun damage and restoring even tone. This system gets brilliant results and is something I would suggest starting in the cooler autumn and winter months.
PureHydro (Hydrofacial) is my personal favourite for a post-holiday skin treat. It restores hydration, exfoliates gently, and revives dull or congested skin. It will bring your skin back to life and give it a fabulous healthy-looking, post holiday glow
Long term prevention of sun damage
You need to bear in mind that sun damage accumulates over time, so consistent protection and care is crucial, so I couldn’t finish without giving a few extra tips on how to keep it at bay:
Daily SPF (minimum of 30) with no exceptions, even on cloudy days. UV light is powerful and it can travel through glass so even if you are indoors or in the car you still need to wear it.
Regular Skin Checks to help monitor moles or pigmentation changes. Always consult a professional if something new develops on your skin or an existing skin blemish starts to change.
Antioxidants in your skincare routine are a must so look to include vitamin C, E, and niacinamide that help neutralise the free radicals that age the skin.
