Why am I losing muscle mass?

Muscle atrophy can occur due to malnutrition, age, genetics, a lack of physical activity or certain medical conditions. Disuse (physiologic) atrophy occurs when you don’t use your muscles enough. Neurogenic atrophy occurs due to nerve problems or diseases.

Menopause leads to an estrogen deficiency that is associated with decreases in skeletal muscle mass and strength.

Male muscle loss is a common symptom of andropause and it manifests itself in the loss of muscle strength and overall muscle mass. Age related muscle loss, or sarcopenia can start as early as 20 or 25 but is most drastic after age 60.
